J. Begum, K. Ahmed and K.N. Bora

Abstract

The enterotoxic activity of cell free culture supernatant (CFCS) of 12 different strains of Escherichia coIi isolated from different sources of drinking water was tested in rabbit ligated ileal loop. Out of 12 selected strains,7 (58.33%) strains, two each of serogroup 08, 020 and 056 and one untypable strain were enterotoxigenic. The dilation indices (DI) in case of positive cases ranged from 0.48 to 0.54 and an alkaline pH ranging from 8.5 to 9.0 Histopathological changes in the rabbit intestine were characterized by submucosal haemorrhage, epithelial cell hyperplasia and mild infiltration with mononuclear cells and neutrophils.
