METAL UPTAKE IN THREE EDIBLE LAGOON FISH SPECIES, ABUDEFDUF SAXATILIS, SIGANUS SUTOR AND EPINEPHELUS MERRA FROM BAIN DES DAMES, MAURITIUS.S.BHAGWANTAbstract This paper reports on a preliminary study carried out to determine Pb, Cu and Fe levels by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry in different parts of three fish species from Bain des Dames. The results indicate the present state of metal contamination of fish species thriving in Bain des Dames. The extent of metal accumulation differed among species, possibly due to differences in behaviour and feeding habits. Overall results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Cu and Fe in the edible parts (muscles) of the species were below the prescribed permissible limits and,are hence, safe for human consumption.
