ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS AMONG UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

Abstract

A survey on environmental awareness was conducted among undergraduate science students of the colleges of Gurdaspur district of Punjab.The degree of awareness regarding the damage caused to natural resources and the effect of pollution on human health were analysed during present investigation. Majority of students had an average knowledge regarding environmental pollution and the role of ecofriendly technologies for the conservation, of our deteriorating environment. Knowledge about ill effects of the use of polythene bags, benefits of the plantation, solid waste management techniques like vermicomposting and use of biofertilisers was satisfactory. More than seventy percent students have neither enrolled themselves as a member of any ecofriendly club nor they are playing any individual role in environmental protection.The remaining were also playing almost no role in environmental protection except their enrollment as member of an ecofriendly club or society.Active participation of students is the utmost requirement for the protection of environment.
