Seema Bedi and Navita Ghai

Abstract

Biodiversity is a term used for richness of a species (plants, animals, micro-organisms) occurring as an interacting biotic component of a ecosystem in a given habitat. Conservation is a planned management of these natural resources, retention of natural balance, diversity and evolutionary changes in the environment. The UN conference on Environment and Development, UNCED held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (1992) helped to highlight the loss of biodiversity at global level and generated a public awareness on the problem.
