Abstract

Absorption of heavy metals like Nickel and Zinc present in electro plating industry using water hyacinth-Eichhorinia sp were studied. Different concentrations (5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 80% and 100%) of the electroplating effluent were prepared and the hyacinth plants were introduced into the above concentrations of effluent. Results showed an active uptake of both the metals by the plants upto the 40% concentration of the effluent. Absorption capacity by the plants gradually declined in 80% and 100% effluent concentration, indicating that higher concentration of effluent curtails the growth and development of plants. The efficiency of the plants to absorb Nickel and Zinc are discussed.
