ALLELOPATHIC EFFECTS OF ROOT LEACHATES OF SOME OBNOXIOUS WEEDS ON GERMINATION AND SEEDLING VIGOUR OF WHEAT

P. Oudhia

Abstract

Allelopathic effects of root leachates of some obnoxious weeds on germination and seedling vigour of wheat were investigated. Fresh samples of weed roots were collected randomly from fields and immersed in water for 24 hours in the ratio of I :1 0 w/v. After 24 hours, leachates were collected and wheat seeds were soaked in these leachates for 24 hours. The allelopathic effects on germination and seedling vigour were observed. Different root leachates produced significant allelopathic effects on wheat. Blumea root leachate was identified as promising leachate for stimulating early germination and seedling vigour. Harmful allelopathic effects of Parthenium and Lantana root leachates were observed.
