EARTHWORM FAUNA OF JAIORE DISTRICT OF RAJASTHAN

Abstract

Earthworm biodiversiv survey was done in 52 different sites of Jalore district of Rajasthan. Only 61.5 per cent sites showed earthworm's presence. Total 5 species belonging to 3 different families viz. Megascolecidae [Lampito mouritii Kingberg and Metaphire posthuma (Vaillant)]k Ocnerodrilidae( Ocnerodrilus occidentalis Eisen and Genus Malaboria) and Octochaetidae [Dichogoster balaui (Michaelsen)] were recorded during present survey. Most earthworm species showed patchy distribution and were present in some restricted habitats, Earthworm species M. posthumo and 0.occidentalis appeared as dominant earthworm species during present study. The minimum and maximum species density was recorded 212.1 ind. m-2 + 52.0 in Malaborio and 26.7 ind. m-2+ 3.3 in D.boloui, respectively.The soils where earthworm occurred exhibited the ranges of 7.3 - 8.9 pH, 20.15 - 30.26 °C temperature, 10.39 -36.73 per cent moisture, 2.69 - 5.26 g Kg-' organic carbon and 0.26-2.81 g Kg-' nitrogen.
