Abstract

Thermal treatment of sewage sludge has been identified as an attractive method in terms of sludge volume reduction and production of reusable by-products. Molten slag is one of the by-products of thermal treatment, which is obtained by incinerating the dewatered sewage sludge up to 900°C for 3 hours and followed by melting at I 450°C for another 45 minutes. This study was carried out to determine the possibility of utilization of sewage sludge molten slag as aggregate in asphalt mixes. The results showed that molten slag fulfills certain requirements as aggregate in asphalt mixes. However, criteria such as flakiness and gradation of aggregate results indicated that molten slag could not be used as aggregate by itself and is recommended to be mixed with conventional aggregate with a ratio of 4:l to produce an asphalt mixe with optimum asphalt content value of 5.22%.
