SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL IN URBAN AREAS CAUSING POLLUTION AND ITS MANAGEMENT

Abstract

Solid waste disposal in urban areas has now become an issue of high priority for all the states in India.We are facing rapidly increasing cost of disposal of solid waste. It is not desirable to throw away solid waste without its proper treatment both environmentally and ethically. It is the responsibility of manufacturers, industrialists and packagers of consumer goods to minimise the amount of refuse.This paper outlines the Crisis due to increasing magnitude of solid waste disposal particularly in Urban areas due to rapid increase population and industrialization etc. This requires source reduction, recycling, incineration and finally proper utilisation of landfills has been discussed.
