RAINFALL IN STATUS SELECTED DROUGHT HIT AREAS IN COIMBATORE DISTRICT AND ITS IMPACT ON WATER TABLE

G. Jayanthi and G.P. Jeyanthi

Abstract

An attempt was made to assess the rainfall status and the quality of natural water resources-borewell and dugwellbPfore and after rainfall in two selected drought areas in Coimbatore district namely Sulur and Palladam. For comparison, Alandurai in the same district was selected which received maximum rainfall during the monsoon season. The water table in these three areas was 'assessed at every 0.5km distance in an area of sq km from where the well water samples were collected. The water samples were assessed for sected physicochemical parameters namely pH, temperature, electrical conductivity, total hardness, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, sodium, chloride, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand. Based on the U.S. Salinity Block Diagram for classification of irrigation waters sodium adsorption ratio and electrical conductivity values were used to grade the target area water samples. The results of the study indicated that the drought area water samples satisfied the levels of the biochemical parameters suitable. for irrigation and these areas will turn fertile provided they receive adequate rainfall.
