IMPACT OF TROPHIC NATURE OF RESERV IR ON THE REPRO- DUCTIVE CAPACITY OF CAT FISH, MYSTUS LEEKERI (DAY)

Ravi Shankar Piska and K. Divakara Chary

Abstract

The present study deals with the effect of trophic nature of reservoirs on the reproductive capacity of a freshwater cat fish, Mystus bleekeri (Day). Three reservoirs are selected for this study, an oligotrophic reservoir — Osmansagar, a mesotrophic reservoir — Mir Alam reservoir and eutrophic reservoir — Hussainsagar. The fish are collected from three reservoirs during its breeding season and estimated absolute and relative fecundities in each reservoir. The oligotrophic resevoir is treated as a control. The absolute and relative fecundities are declined significantly (P < 005) in eutrophic and are increased significantly (P> 0.05) in mesotrophic reservoir. This indicates that the trophic nature of reservoir plays a pivotal role on reproductive capacity of the fish.
