PHYSICO-CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BOTTOM SEDIMENT OF LACUSTRINE HABITATS OF JAMMU II. LAKE MANSAR

V.K. Anand and Suman Sharma

Abstract

Littoral region of one of the subtropical, alkaline, hard water lake of Jammu, i.e., Lake Mansar has been investigated with respect to the seasonal fluctuations in various physico-chemical characteristics of the bottom sediment at fixed research stations. These variations have been statistically analysed for two way ANOVA which revealed that these parameters varied significantly among different stations during same month but insignificantly within each station over the study period. Among various parameters organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, copper, zinc and manganese appeared to be the important parameters in controlling peculiar zonation patterns or heterogeneous distribution of the submerged macrophytes at different depths of the littoral regions. Coefficient of correlation's between various parameters of the bottom sediment have also been derived and discussed to understand the trophic status of the lake and also to formulate management strategies of this lake for future conservation perspectives.
