AQUATIC FOWLS OF WETLANDS IN MANIPUR

Abstract

Manipur is a hill girt state in the North-Eastern corner of India, an important hot spot area and a Ramsar Site for Loktak lake. The wetland areas of this state are taking a significant role in the survival and reproduction of many endangered species like Sangai, Cervus eldi eldi and aquatic fowls migrated from the different countries of the world. Migratory aquatic fowls are truely international components of bio-diversity, the occurrence of 25,997 populations, 72 species (49 resident + 23 migratory) belonging to 44 genera, 12 families, 6 orders, with their local names, distribution and status have been reported in the present investigation.
