Abstract

Information regarding genetic variability present in a population and estimates of heritability are prerequisite for improvement of any crop. In general, the phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters studied. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation was observed for grain yield per plant and the lowest for days to maturity. The high heritability with high genetic advance was observed for grain yield per plant, plant height, stem diameter, length of branches of panicle, panicle length, panicle width, 1000 grains weight and shoot fly incidence indicating the preponderance of additive gene action and hence these characters can be improved by simple selection method.
