THE RELATION OF AGA L PRODUCTIVITY TO THE NATURE OF PHYSIEOCHERNICA/ ENVIRONMENT OF A FRESH WATER TROPICAL LAKE

J. Pandey, Usha Pandey and H.R. Tyagi

Abstract

Situated away from the main Udaipur urban settlement, Baghdara lake is a perennial fresh water tropical reservoir. Water quality parameters and the associated variations in algal pigments, biomass and productivity were recorded at four different sampling stations of the lake for year 1998. Variations in algal pigments (chl a, b and carotenoid), algal biomass and productivity were regulated, to a greater extent, by N and P levels of lake water. The study provides evidence of substantial P import through bird droppings. This has important bearing for water bodies which have not been subjected to anthropogenic activities.
