HOUSING CONDITION IN RURAL AREAS OF ASSAM AND ITS IMPACT ON ECOLOGY

Abstract

Housing condition is one of the indicators of economic and quality of life of the people. The housing condition in rural areas of Assam is not very depressing. However maximum use of non-commercial locally available building materials in case of more than 81 per cent of the households indicates a semi permanent structure which calls for frequent renovation and rapid deforestation. The average floor space per capita was 88.92 sq. ft and number of rooms available to per household was three. The kitchen condition was not very satisfactory. as high as 86 per cent of the households experienced suffocation within the kitchen. Only 6.41 per cent reported pucca lavatory of sanitary type.
