FISH DIVERSITY IN THE HILAND WATERBUDIES OF KERALA

K. Hari Krishnan and P.K. Abdul Azis

Abstract

The fish fauna of the four widely varied inland waterbodies in Kerala was studied for a period of one year. The fishery resource of these waterbodies generally composed of 33 species. The river tract and the backwater represented both freshwater and brackishwater species. The diversity (4.12) and richness (4.44) of the fish communities was found to be higher in the river. The higher evenness index values obtained indicated a rather uniform distribution of different fish species in the four aquatic biotopes.
