IMPACT OF THE TOURISM !NDUSTRY ON GROUND WATER IN CALANGUTE, GOA

Davina V. Gonsalves and Joe D'Souza

Abstract

Ground water samples collected from wells adjacent to hotel constructions in various locations in Calangute, a village in Goa, were analysed for their quality by conducting physicochemical, chemical and microbiological analysis. Results indicated an excessive load of enteric pathogens, thus establishing the non potability of water. The nitrates and phosphates content in these ground water samples were rather high, so also were the biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand.
