A STUDY OF THE ACTIVITIES OF ENZYMES IN FEW BASIN MANGROVES OF KOILARN DISTRICT, KERALASuja Simon and K.G. Ajit KumarAbstract The present attempt is to analyze the activities of Catalase( CAT), Peroxidase(POD), and Super oxide dismutase(SOD) in basin mangroves namely Acanthus, Avicennia, Bruguiera, Excoecaria, Lumnitzera and RInzophora. Catalase is an enzyme indispensable for stress defence in C., plants and its primary function is to protect cells against H202. SOD activity was high in members localized in habitats suited to hypoxia. The high level of CAT and POD and the low profile of SOD have tempted to search for the possibilities of getting more H2O, than that produced by the dismutase conversion of active oxygen species.
