Abstract

Ranebennur tank (Doddakere) was studied for the period of two years (2004-05 and 2005-06), twenty two Physicochemical parameters were analysed. A total thirty nine species of zooplankton were recorded, that constitute 30.76% of Cladocera, 15.38% of Copepoda, 43.58% of Rotifera and 10.25% of Ostracoda.A significant positive correlation was observed between Sulphate and pH (P< 0.01), water transparency and pH (P<0.01) ,Transparancy and DO (P<0.01), Transparancy and free carbon dioxide (P<0.01), Total dissolved solids and Total alkalinity (P<0.01) TDS and salinity (P<0.01)TDS and PO, (P<0.01),TDS and electric conductivity (P<0.01),chemical oxygen demand and chloride (P<0.0 I), salinity and conductivity (P<0.01) Rainfall and Total dissolved solids (P<0.05).The significant negative correlation was observed between pH and free carbon dioxide (P<0.01), dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, water temperature and ammonical nitrogen (P<0.05),Total dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide (P<0.05), DO and BOD (P<0.01) water temperature and COD (P0.0 I ) water transparency and phosphate (P<0.01) during our study period. Due to the land conversion in to extension areas the catachment area is urbanized so domestic sewage is continuously added to the tank and the water of this pond is fully utilized by various purposes such as washing, bathing of cattles, cleaning of vehicles. The pond gets enough water during monsoon but in post monsoon period water level is very much reduced. There fore we recommend that this pond link to canal of upper Tunga for continuous water. supply to the pond.
