THE STATUS OF TRAFFIC GENERATED NOISE POLLUTION IN ASANSOL TOWN

S.K.Chakraborty and D.Banerjee

Abstract

A comprehensive noise exposure study was conducted in and around some residential and silence zones from April 2006 to January 2007, in Asansol. A total of ten locations including nursing home, hospital, court, temple and private and company residential quarters were selected for traffic noise monitoring. Field recorded data were converted to statistical parameters that best described the noise levels and were used for assessment purpose. The study reveals that present noise level in all the locations exceeds the limit prescribed by Central Pollution Control Board, both for day as well as night time. It can be concluded that the population in this industrial area, particularly around sensitive zones like educational institutions, hospitals, courts & places of worship are exposed to noise pollution ranging from significant to severe level.
