Abstract

A study was undertaken to assess the bacteriological quality of ground and surface water in the rural areas around Angul-Talcher Industrial Zone, Orissa. 252 samples from ponds, dug wells and tube wells, spread over seven locations around the industrial zone, were analysed bimonthly from July 2001 to May 2003. The study reveals that the pond waters are of poor microbial quality unfit even for bathing purpose. In terms of coliform counts the tube wells are found to be safer sources than dug wells. All the dug wells and 30% of the tube well waters are found unfit for human consumption where as 70% of tube well waters are found to provide safe drinking water during winter and summer.
