Utpal Goswami and H.P. Sarma

Abstract

In the present time, the solid waste generation and disposal has raised a major issue in the urban areas. The hazardous effect of solid wastes has a destructive influence on the eco-friendlv atmosphere of the cities and towns. The ciiv (Guwahati is also facing a critical problem due to the solid wastes. Considering and realizing the environmental effect of the generated solid wastes, an experimental study was conducted to get a quantitative estimation of the various chemical parameters in the bio-degradable part of the solid waste samples collected from different parts of Guwahati city. This basically aims at depicting an idea of ihe available concentration level of fluoride, chloride, nitrate-nitrogen, sulphide, sulphate and phosphate-phosphorus in the collected samples. The results showed variations in concentration of the water soluble and acid digested part of the sample extracts. The samples collected from Pathanbazar, Adabari, Machkhowa and Beltola bazar showed an average high range of concentration in these parameters. The findings hang a picture regarding the nature of ihe solid wastes lying in Guwahati city.
