STUDIES ON WATER POLLUTION AND BREMEDJATJON OF SOME POLLUTANTS FROM RIVER MUSI, HYDERABAD, ANDHRA PRADESH

K. M. Elizabeth and CH. Swapnal

Abstract

The physico-chemical and microbiological analysis of water from river Musi, Hyderabad was performed by employing standard water analysis methods. The physical parameters tested were pH, turbidity, conductivity, temperature and some of these parameters have exceeded the permissible limit. The microbiological parameters and chemical parameters were beyond the permissible limits in this water indicating that these waters are unfit for drinking. Pollutants like nitrates and nickel were within the permissible limits. Studies on bioremediation of hexavalent chromium, iron, ammonia and phenol from these waters by live, killed and immobilized A. niger, S. cervisiae, Fusarium and Rhizo pus species revealed that these microorganism could significantly remove the pollutants from water. Live and killed microbes were very efficient in the removal of the pollutants except ammonia.
