I. Sundar

Abstract

Bio-diversity provides a foundation for the continued existence of a healthy planet and our own wellbeing. Biodiversity conservation entails a shift from a reactive posture protecting nature from the impact of development to a proactive effort seeking to meet people's needs from biological resource while ensuring the long term ecological sustainability of earth's biotic wealth. This paper deals with the importance of bio-diversity in preservation of life and habitat of various species of flora and fauna along with human beings. This paper analyzes the status of biodiversity on the basis of some indicators pertaining to both developed and developing countries. Attempts are also made to assess the status of environmental degradation, environmental protection and natural capitat status in selected countries. The result of this analysis indicates that there is an inter-country variation in respect of all the selected indicators of bio-diversity, environmental degradation, environmental protection and value of natural capital. This paper concludes with some policy measures to enhance the status of bio- diversity along with environmental protection.
