ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF CERTAIN AQUATIC ANGIOSPERMS AGAINST SOME PATHOGENIC BACTERIAK. VASU AND M.A. SINGARACHARYAAbstract Twenty aquatic plants dominant in this region were selected for their antimicrobial activity against Pscudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus ccrcus, Staphylococcus aureus. Among these plants the flowers of Ny mphaea nouchali, lpomea aquatica and Ludocgia paroitiora were effective. The' solvents methanol, ethanol were useful in extraction of antimicrobial compounds from the plant materials. The aqueous extracts of the plant were not so effective while petroleum ether failed to extract any antimocrobial compounds from the plants. Aponogeton natans and Sagittaria guayanensis are the aquatic plants without any antimicrobial activity in any solvent extracts.
