BLOOD OSMOLAIITY SHIFT DUE TO ACID WATER IN THE AFRICAN LUNGFISH, PROTOPTERUS ANNECTENS (OWEN)A.I. OKAFORAbstract Blood osmolality adjustments in the African lungfish, Protopterus annectens (Owen) following acclimation to acid water was investigated. Healthy adult specimens of the African lungfish, Protopterus annectens. 0 (mean weight 295.5g, mean length 36.7cm) procured from Oguta lake at Oguta Nigeria were subjected to acid water of the following pH values - 4.6, 5.2, 5.8, 6.4, 7.0 and 7.6 respectively. The results revealed that reduction in water pH had significant negative correlations (r = - 0.973756, -0.979796, -0.976473 p<0.05) with blood osmolality Na+ and K+ concentrations respectively. The essence of the findings in the culture of this specie of fish in acid water regimes are discussed.
