INFLUENCE OF DYE EFFLUENT ON THE AMINO ACID AND FATTY ACID CONTENT OF CYAN OBACTERIA

S. VIJAYAKUMAR, N. THAJUDDIN AND C. MANOHARAN

Abstract

Influence of dye industry effluent on the biochemistry, particularly, amino acid and fatty acid contents of two cyanobacteria such as Oscillatoria brevis and Westiellopsis prolific-a was studied. Altogether 14 different amino acids and 19 different fatty acids were detected in both test organisms. Some of the amino acids and fatty acids found in the control were not detected from the effluent grown cyanobacteria and vice- versa. However, cyanobacteria with effluent recorded higher quantity of total amino acids and fatty acids when compared to control. The variation in their quantity and quality has been discussed.
