SURFACTANTS MEDIATED RECOVERY OF ANTHRACENE AND PYRENE FROM CONTAMINATED SOIL

N.VASUDE VAN AND P.ARULAZHAGAN

Abstract

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are released into the environment by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels and oil spills. These have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on human beings. Surfactant having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moiety enhance the recovery of PAHs. The present study was conducted for the recovery of hydrophobic substances especially PAHs from soil using chemical surfactants and rhamnolipid biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens NSI to remediate the soil contaminated with PAHs from two wheeler service, petrol filling and heavy vehicle service stations. The results showed that among the surfactants used, biosurfactant could recover 98% of PAHs.
