EFFECT OF AQUEOUS SULFUR DIOXIDE ON ULTRA STRUCTURE OF SPINACEA OLERACEA LEAVESRABIA GEELANI, MINU BASHIR, SHAJRUL AMIN, AFZAL ZARGAR AND AKBAR MASOODAbstract Leaf discs (1 cm in diameter) of Spinacea oleracea were treated with aqueous sulfur dioxide (10,100,1000ppm) for four hours under illumination (500 watt reflectorised tungsten lamp). Ultra microscopic studies on the treated leaf discs showed plasmolysis of cells only at 100 ppm sulfur dioxide concentration. The treatment also resulted in active mesophyll cell collapse at the same concentration. A direct effect on stomatal opening was also observed.
