BIODEGRADATION OF FERTILIZER INDUSTRY EFFLUENT

S. Y. AFTAB BEGUM AND C.M. NOORJAHAN

Abstract

An investigation has been carried out to biodegrade untreated fertilizer industry effluent using native fungus Aspergillus niger and non-native, white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The results revealed the potential of Aspergillus niger and Phanerochaete chrysosporium to degrade the parameters (pH, TDS, TSS, BOD, COD and Ammonia) of fertilizer effluent by 50-99% which were found to be higher than permissible limits of CPCB (1995) before biodegradation thereby almost satisfying CPCB (1995) standards for effluent discharge.
