IN VITRO PROPAGATION OF THE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED FERN CYATHEA CRINITA (HOOK.) COPEL.S. CATHARIN SARA AND V.S. MANICKAMAbstract As part of an in vitro conservation strategy, multiplication of Cyathea crinita (Hook.) Copel from spores was attempted. Methods followed to raise this endangered fern was elaborately explained. Developmental features in various nutrient medium and pH was studied in detail. Maximum spore germination (92%) was recorded within 10 days in liquid modified Miller and Miller medium and on blocks of Tree fern fibre soaked in modified Miller and Miller medium without sucrose and hormones. Tamarind juice was used as an additive in this medium. The ontogeny of spore into prothalli, sex organ ratio, reproductive potential of the species and sporophyte emergence were studied. The effective potting mix and maintenance of sporophyte and its survival percentage are discussed in this paper.
