GRADING OF MILK QUALITY IN DINDIGUL TOWN, INDIA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO COLIFORMS

Abstract

The present study deals with the grading of milk quality in Dindigul town special reference to coliforms which were analysed in seven samples. Comparative microbial analysis of milk samples such as standard plate count, methylene blue reduction test was carried out. The tests show that five samples were poor, one was fair, and only one was good. Biochemical tests such as Indole production test, methyl red, Glucose and lactose fermentation tests showed positive results, whereas Voges proskauer and citrate utilization test showed negative results in all the seven milk samples. Out of the seven milk samples, only four milk samples were produced metallic sheen and were confirmed and identified as Eschericia coll.
