STUDIES OF BALLAST WATER AND TANK SEDIMENTS OF VESSELS, VACIF AND FOSTRALIM AT PORTO DE AVEIRO, AVEIRO, PORTUGAL

Abstract

Today. the ballast water appears lobe the most important vector fur ma tine spec.s transfer throughout the world and become Aquatic Nuisance Species (ANSI which many displace the native species and disrupt human, social and economic activities that depend on water resources. Sent. an athnret analyze the ballast water and ballast tank sediments of two vessels viz., Vaglf (General Cargo) and Fate.. (Chemical Tanker) were studied at Porto De Aveiro, Aveiro. The analyses revealed presence of various phytoplankton sped. like, Chaelotero$ species, Nreicula species, diatoms like. Thalessiosiraspec,". Casonodiscus species, Plea rosira species and Cyclolella spocies. Apart from the above, dininotlIPMAIT were also seen, which belonged to Alexandrian, caterelk A)nandriwn Alrandth usitamrse, Cy:m.140,km ralrnalum and CollyaulaX yalyalra were seen. These organisms were found to sum', and to havo potential to reproduce and remain viable during the voyage in oxygen and light depleted water.
