CHANGES IN THE WATER QUALITY AND TOTAL COLIFORM BACTERIAL LOAD IN A STRETCH OF RIVER MAHANANDA AT SILIGURI CITY, WEST BENGAL, INDIASUDIP BARAT AND PRITHWIRAI JHAAbstract The present study was carried out on a stretch of river Mahananda at Siliguri city from May to September, 2001 to evaluate the impact of the city waste on the physico-chemical characteristics and total conform bacterial load. The high nutrient concentration and total coliform counts at certain sites reveal the deterioration of the water, which seemed unfit for domestic consumption.
