DECOLORIZATION OF BLACK LIQUOR BY SEQUENTIAL USE OF IMMOBILIZED P. CHYSOSPORIUM AND K. AEROGENESHARIT JHA, M. SAME, J.D. DHAKEt AND M.B. PATILAbstract Black liquor an effluent from pulp and paper industry has dark brown colour and high content of Lignin and its derivatives. K. acrogenes was found to be most effective microorganism for decolorization and lignin removal among various microorganisms tested under their individual optimum conditions. K. aerogenes improved its efficiency on immobilization and exhibited maximum activity in its first hour of exposure to black Liquor. Use of fresh batches of immobilized K. aerogenes further enhanced decolorization. Sequential treatment of black liquor with immobilized P. chysosporium and K. aerogenes manifested a synergistic activity.
