R.K. NAYAK AND B.P. CHOUDHURY

Abstract

Mahanadi delta was potential site of mangroves which have degraded in course of time due to operation of various factors such as the inception of Paradeep Port and various industries like Paradeep Phosphates Ltd., Oswall Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. as a result of which the present mangroves are extant in shrubby forms and few trees. Keeping in view the various socio-economic importance and germplasm conservation of threatened mangrove species adequate steps should be take for natural regeneration and rehabilitation of the mangroves by the State Government as well as the Central Government in collaboration with different voluntary organisations. Restoration of mangroves in Mahanadi delta is essential so as to maintain environmental equilibrium in the east coast of India. This will reduce the casualty of various life forms and the green coverage will protect the environment in this region.
