ETHNOBOTANICAL SURVEY REGARDING THE MNAGEMENT OF ARTHRITIS BY TRADITIONAL HEALERS OF PUNE, DISTRICT, MAHARASHTRA STATE, INDIAM.K. Desale , P.B. Bhamare and S.R. PatilAbstract The present study was based upon the Ethnomedico-botanical survey on management of medical practices by tribal and nontribal Vaidya (Herbal healers). Main objectives of present study reports inventory of health practices on arthritis used by Vaidya of Pune district, Maharashtra, India. Structured interview - schedule was conducted for 12 Vaidya covering area like disease, cause, classification of arthritis, diagnostic and prognostic methods used, treatment, plant and plant parts used, administration of formula, dosage dietary practices used and referral for further treatment. More than 85% of village vaidyas had clear understanding regarding the disease of arthritis. The study identified 36 species of medicinal plants, 27 formulations and various dietary practices used by the vaidyas in the managements of arthritis. The study documents treatments and practices followed by vaidyas, scientific studies done using these formulation practices may help tradi -practitioners to practice proper medicines.
