PRIORITIZATION OF SUB-BASINS OF MANSI RIVER BASED ON MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS: A REMOTE SENSING AND GIS APPROACH

A.K.Sinha and P.K. Singh

Abstract

Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques are being effectively used in recent times as tools in determining the quantitative description of basin geometry, i.e. morphometric analysis. In the present study, each of the six sub-basins of Mansi river in Udaipur district, Rajasthan have been studied in terms of the morphometric parameters - stream length, bifurcation ratio, drainage density, stream frequency, texture ratio, form factor, circularity ratio, elongation ratio and compactness ratio and prioritised all the sub-basins under study. After analysis of morphometric parameters, assigned ranks based on value/relationship to arrive the compound parameter values for a final ranking of the sub-basins and prioritization rating of six sub-basin of Mansi river is carried out. The sub-basin with the lowest compound parameter value is given the highest priority. The prioritization results reveal that sub-basin number 1 rank highest, which compound parameter value is lowest as 2.75 and are considered as high priority for conservation measures by planners and decision makers. The next priority is given to sub-basin 2, sub-basin 4, sub-basin 6, sub-basin 5 and sub-basin 3 respectively based on morphometric analysis.
