Abstract

Scouring around the bridge piers causes a great deal of damage every year around the globe. Local scour is caused due to the large-scale eddy structures or a system of vortices, which are developed near the obstructions. To control this, a number of different methods have been proposed. One of the engineering methods of encountering to local scouring problems involves placing slot in the pier for protection. In this present work, in clear water condition, scouring time development around three cylindrical slotted piers was studied and compared to without slot pier. The flow depth will be distributed in three equal portion i.e. bottom, mid and roof according to the slot distance from the bed (0, B & 2B; B is pier diameter). We tested each slot in three different bed surface elevations. In all physical slotted piers, the area of slot was constant and the ratio of length to width of slot was varied. Results showed that, at any elevation from bed surface, increasing slot width is more efficient than increasing slot length and slower scouring time development will be achieved, if we plan to control local scour depth in slot constant area at a bridge pier.
