Abstract

Mining operation causes many adverse impacts on water due to the extractive as well as the destructive nature of the operations. Water is essential to the health, well-being, food security, and socio-economic development of humankind. The water quality analysis has been done with the surface and groundwater of the sample which was taken from different locations around the study area (Noamundi block, Jharkhand, India). The physico-chemical water quality parameters like turbidity, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, alkalinity, sulphate, and dissolved oxygen (DO), have been measured. The weighted arithmetic index (WAI) method is used to calculate the water quality index (WQI) and they are further classified into five categories. This study observed that near the mining area the water quality is very poor. So, it is of paramount importance to monitor the quality of water regularly, before using it in various essential aspects of our lives like animal husbandry and ablutions, even drinking and cooking.
