Abstract

Physico-chemical and microbiological analyses of packaged drinking water sold commercially in Chennai, Tamilnadu was carried out. Samples of packaged drinking water sold in polythene bottles and sachets were collected from various outlets in Chennai. The samples were analyzed for physico-chemical and microbiological parameters following the standard methods of APHA (1989). The results showed that Physico-chemical parameters like electrical conductivity and phosphate were above the permissible levels. Presence of bacteria and fungi were also observed in the water samples which calls for the need for stringent quality control in the production of packaged drinking water.
