Abstract

Water is the one of the prime natural resources and it is the basic need for the all living beings on earth. This paper presents the physico-chemical characteristics of water of Gogabil Lake. Gogabil is an ‘ox-bow’ lake and located about 19 km South-East to district headquarter of Katihar, Bihar. Monthly changes in physical and chemical parameters such as Ambient temperature, Water temperature, Transparency, pH, Free Carbon dioxide, Carbonate Alkalinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Total hardness, Chloride, Nitrate, Phosphate were analyzed for two years from Aug, 2009 to Jan, 2011. The value of ambient temperature varies from 18 °C to 32.5 °C and water temperature was 17.4 °C to 33.8 °C. Transparency ranged from 16.75 cm to 108.5 cm. pH observed value was 6.1 to 7.4. Dissolved Oxygen ranged from 3 mg/L to 12.6 mg/L. FCO2 ranged from 22.55 mg/L to 150.5 mg/L. Total hardness ranged from 44.5 mg/L to 132 mg/L. Observed values of Chloride was 2.12 mg/L to 8.0 mg/L, nitrate was 0.031 mg/L to 0.038 mg/L and phosphate value was 0.033 mg/L to 0.047 mg/L.
