Abstract

In the present paper a mathematical/statistical model has been developed for prediction of the quantity of infectious medical waste likely to be generated in three hospitals of Agra (India). For formulating the model the data on bed occupancy and quantity of generated waste have been collected by the method of observation and survey conducted for two consecutive years. The data exhibited that there exist a linear co-relation between the bed occupancy and the quantity of waste generated. A quadratic equation has been used for formulating the prediction model. The objective function has been calculated by using the least square method. Average monthly predicted values of biomedical waste are within +10% of actual values for three hospitals in the city of Agra. The value of R2 between observed and predicted values of quantity of waste for these three hospitals were found to be 0.56, 0.61 and 0.69 respectively. The model developed is found to be useful in finding out the current rate of waste generation for evaluating the existing situation and optimize the management practices in advance to avoid any hazardous situation.
