Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore antioxidant potency of mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) peel extract (MPE) for repairing damaged pancreatic beta cells and elevating insulin production. This research was done in vivo using male mice (strain BALB/C, 3 to 4 months old, 30 to 40 g). Mice were divided into 2 groups, which were the control group and the treatment group. The control group was further divided into 3 subgroups: normal group (non-diabetic), diabetic group, and met form in group (given metformin HCl 100 mg/kg BW). The treatment group was also divided into 3 subgroups: P1 (given dose of 50 mg/kg BW), P2 (given dose of 100 mg/kg BW), and P3 (given dose of 200 mg/kg BW). Diabetic mice obtained after 7-12 days injection with multiple low doses of streptozotocin (MLD-STZ) 40 mg/kg bw for 5 consecutive days. Interestingly, the present study showed that induction of MPE was able to impair pancreatic beta cells by increasing the diameter of the islet. Plasma insulin level was also increased significantly after the MPE treatment. A positive correlation was found between the increase of Langerhans islet diameter and plasma insulin level. In conclusion, MPE in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice was associated with the attenuation in oxidative stress and inflammatory, which also had anti diabetic and antioxidant activities.
