TRAFFIC NOISE PREDICTION MODEL DEVELOPMENT USING GIS AND 3D FOR METROPOLITAN CITY IN INDIA

KARTHIK K., M.S. AND P. PARTHEEBAN

Abstract

The recognition of road traffic noise as one of the main sources of environmental pollution and it has led to develop models that enable to predict noise levels. The main objective of this study is to develop a GIS based 3D noise prediction model for Metropolitan City in India. Measurements of noise levels were carried out for Chennai City and same data used for developing GIS noise model. Noise maps for the different locations were generated using Arc GIS version 10.3 and areas affected by noise were determined. 3D noise model was also developed to study the effects of noise on 15 busiest locations in the study area. The noise level in first floor is less than that in ground floor when volume and speed are increased. The results obtained in this study show that the city is suffering from severe noise pollution due to road traffic. The models can be effectively used as a decision support tool for predicting equivalent noise level in Chennai city of India.
