PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF WATER OF THE DOWNSTREAM OF THE RIVER SUBANSIRI, ASSAMRANJIT DUTTA AND S.K. SARMAAbstract Most of the Indian rivers water is polluted. The level of harmful element is found to be increasing in all the rivers. Downstream of the river Subansiri has a considerable width and depth. The river is meandering in nature throughout its travel of approximately 130 km in its downstream. The quality of water need to be evaluated thoroughly as it influences both aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Typically, water quality is determined by comparing the physical and chemical characteristics of a water sample with water quality guidelines or standards. The commonly measured chemical parameters of water sample includes pH, alkalinity, hardness, nitrates, nitrites and ammonia, total phosphate, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) etc. To study the physico-chemical parameters of the Subansiri river, water samples were collected regularly for the period of two years, i.e. January 2016 to December 2017 at monthly intervals. The result showed that the physico-chemical parameters exhibit non uniform distribution in the study areas of the river Subansiri and indicate its pollution free environment.
