GROUNDWATER HYDROCHEMISTRY AROUND THE SHRIMP PONDS OF ERSAMA AND BALIKUDA BLOCKS OF JAGATSINGHPUR DISTRICT, ODISHAPRAKASH CHANDRA DALAI, J.K. TRIPATHY, K.K. BARIK AND SMRUTI R. PANDAAbstract Groundwater samples from around the shrimp ponds located in Ersama and Balikuda blocks of Jagatsinghpur district were analysed to determine their TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and the concentration of major ions such as Na+, K+, Ca++, Mg++, HCO3-, SO4-2 and Cl-. Analysis results indicated that the groundwater has been contaminated by salt water as evident from the value of ratios such as Cl-/HCO3- and Mg++/Ca++. The concentration of several parameters such as TDS, Na+and Cl- in the groundwater nearby the shrimp ponds exceeded the maximum permissible limits thereby making the water unfit for human consumption. However, the aquifers situated away from the shrimp ponds are found to be less affected by salinity.
