Abstract

The present study discusses the hydro-geochemical characteristics of twenty shallow water samples collected from coastal shallow aquifers located at Kollam district, Kerala. The ionic concentration of groundwater is evaluated using hydro geochemical characterization schemes proposed by Hill-Piper, Durov, and Wilcox. Water quality is also reviewed with the aid of drinking and irrigation quality standards proposed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The analysis reveals that the majority of water samples are of good to moderate quality for drinking and excellent for irrigational purposes. Estimation of fluoride is carried out in selected samples. Study reveals that fluoride and other hydrogeochemical parameters are within the permissible limits of WHO and BIS standards.
