ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS ABOUT SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION IN BAGHDAD CITY

Abstract

The presentation of particulate matter, biological molecules, or other deleterious matter into earth's atmosphere, brings about illness, death to humans, and harm to another livelihood being such as animals and food crops, or the natural or built environment happened as a result of air pollution from man-made and innate sources. The aim of the present study was to determine the knowledge and perception of Iraqi people represented by randomly samples about the air pollution in Baghdad city explore people's knowledge about the impact of air pollution on the community health. Deduce the solutions to reduce the level of air pollution in Baghdad city. This study was a cross sectional sampling survey involving 250 respondents in Baghdad, data composed of public knowledge and perception about atmospheric impurity, source as well as type of pollutants in air, the impact of those pollutants on the human health and the efforts to reduce air pollution in Baghdad city. Present study indicated that 69.2% of peoples in Baghdad city are not well aware of atmospheric contamination and their information in this scope is less. Awareness programs on air pollution should be organized, even in communities with educated people to increase public awareness on air pollution. It is necessary to plan specific educational programs about air pollution (nature, source, nature of unpolluted air). Learning the consequences of air pollution in primary school and common community may avoid the sources of air pollution.
